Running hydration gear: what to carry and when

Most runs need nothing. The long ones need the right kit. Here’s the honest guide to vests, handhelds, belts and electrolytes — and the race-day rule that matters more than any of them.

The short version

Under an hour: nothing. 60–90 minutes: a handheld (Nathan SpeedDraw) or a FlipBelt with a bottle. Long runs, heat or trails: a vest (Salomon Active Skin 4). Over 90 minutes add proper electrolytes (Precision Hydration PH 1000). Practise all of it in training; change nothing on race day.

When you actually need to carry water

Under an hour in mild weather: you don’t. Drink before and after. Over 60–90 minutes, hot days, or long runs in a marathon build: you do — and the right kit depends on how much and how you like to carry it. Handhelds for short-to-medium runs, belts for a bottle plus keys and gels, vests for anything long or off-road. Electrolytes matter beyond about 90 minutes or in heat; before that, water is fine.

#1 Long runs & trail

Salomon Active Skin 4 Set Hydration Vest

Salomon Active Skin 4 Set Hydration Vest

Salomon’s entry-level vest with the same soft-flask front pockets and bounce-free stretch fit as the pricier ADV Skin range — flasks included, at half the price.

#2 Best handheld

Nathan SpeedDraw Plus Insulated

Nathan SpeedDraw Plus Insulated

The classic handheld: the strap holds it so your hand relaxes, the insulation keeps water cool for an hour, and there’s a pocket for a gel and a key.

Right for 60–90 minute runs when a vest feels like too much.

#3 Belt for phone + bottle

FlipBelt Classic + Flipbelt bottle

FlipBelt Classic + Flipbelt bottle

The belt that made belts respectable: a stretch tube you slide things into, no buckle, no bounce. Add the curved FlipBelt bottle for water.

For runners who hate things on their hands or shoulders.

#4 Electrolytes

Precision Hydration PH 1000 tablets

Precision Hydration PH 1000 tablets

Most electrolyte tabs are too weak for sweaty runners; PH 1000 has the sodium level that actually prevents the late-run fade and cramp.

Use on runs over 90 minutes and race day — practice with it in training, never try it first on the day.

Race-day rule: nothing new. Whatever you carry and drink at your charity run should be exactly what you used in the final long runs of your training plan.

Frequently asked questions

Should I carry water on a 10K run?

Usually not — under an hour in mild weather, drink before and after. Carry water for runs over 60–90 minutes, in heat, or if you know you sweat heavily.

Handheld, belt or vest for running?

Handheld for 60–90 minute runs; belt if you want hands and shoulders free with a phone and gels; vest for long runs, trails and hot marathon training where you need 1L+ and storage.

Do runners need electrolytes?

Beyond about 90 minutes or in heat, yes — plain water alone can dilute sodium and bring on the late fade. Practice your electrolyte routine in training before using it on race day.
